JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in the state is becoming increasingly worrying as the number of flood victims has surged past 2,000 people as of 8pm tonight.
A total of 2,524 residents from 722 families are now housed in 33 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) across five affected districts, up from 1,786 residents from 533 families in 30 PPS across five districts at 6pm this evening.
State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman, Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani, said Kulai witnessed a doubling of victims, recording 675 victims from 171 families in five PPS.
He said Kota Tinggi remains the most affected district, with 1,093 residents from 344 families housed in 13 PPS.
"The number of flood victims in Kluang has also increased to 354 residents from 99 families in five PPS tonight, compared to 328 residents from 83 families at 6pm.
"In Pontian, the number of flood victims has surged to 254 residents from 64 families in five PPS, compared to only 134 victims from 37 families in four PPS at 6pm.
"The number of flood victims in Johor Baru is recorded at 148 residents from 44 families housed in five PPS, covering areas in Skudai, Puteri Wangsa, and Tebrau," he said in a statement tonight.
Azmi, who is also the Johor state secretary, informed that six rivers in the state are still at dangerous levels.
He said these include Sungai Lenik in Batu Pahat; Sungai Kahang in Kluang; Sungai Sayong in Kampung Siam, Kulai; Sungai Pontian Besar in Kulai; Sungai Skudai in Kampung Laut, Johor Bahru; and Sungai Sedili Kecil in Kota Tinggi.
"Five rivers in Johor are at warning levels, including Sungai Sedili Kecil at Jambatan Sedili Kecil, Kota Tinggi; Sungai Sayong in Kampung Murni Jaya; Sungai Skudai in Kampung Pasir; and Sungai Tiram in Johor Bahru, as well as Sungai Jemaluang in Mersing.
"Five other rivers are at alert levels, including Sungai Segamat; Sungai Skudai in Kampung Separa, Kulai; Sungai Pulai in Pontian; Sungai Punggai in Kota Tinggi; and Sungai Endau in Mersing," he said.
