PM launches Penang Mutiara Line LRT project, operations set for 2031 [WATCH]

GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Bandar Sri Pinang here today, marking the commencement of a transformative new chapter for the state's public transport network.

The 29.5km LRT line is poised to strengthen regional connectivity, enhance mobility, and support Penang's economic growth for decades to come.

Anwar, in his speech, said the LRT project would not be just any LRT project but should have its own identity.

"While we strive for modernity, we also need to make this unique for Penang.

"As such, we should ensure that the LRT project is not only modern but culturally enriching and vibrant," he said.

In his speech, Anwar spoke about the transformative impact of the Mutiara Line LRT, calling it a catalyst for economic growth, social prosperity, and national unity.

He highlighted its role in setting a new standard for infrastructure in Malaysia and underscored its potential to stimulate high-value investments, foster new industries, and bring economic benefits to Penang and the northern corridor as a whole.

Present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

Anwar called on MRT Corp to expedite the project while ensuring greater transparency throughout its implementation.

The Mutiara Line LRT project will span a total of 29.5km, with 21 strategically located stations, including a provisional station at Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A).

The alignment, starting at PSR-A, features two lines: one extending to Komtar and the other to Penang Sentral. Trains will run alternately on these lines, ensuring seamless and efficient transportation for all commuters.

With this dual headway alignment, commuters will enjoy seamless travel from the Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral for interchange with the ETS and Komuter train service or direct journey to Komtar, the central interchange hub for future metro rail.

Scheduled to begin operations in December 2031, the Mutiara Line LRT project will create thousands of job opportunities, attract substantial investments, and greatly enhance the quality of life for the people of Penang.
