Nancy: Stringent steps for childcare centre licensing approval essential

PUTRAJAYA: While obtaining a licence for childcare centres can be challenging, the stringent approval process is essential to ensure operators meet the necessary requirements to safeguard children's safety.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry cannot influence the approval process if operators fail to meet the standards set by authorities such as the Fire and Rescue Department and city councils.

"These authorities are responsible for ensuring that premises meet safety standards before granting approval to operate as childcare centres.

"We cannot push for approvals if applicants have not complied with the necessary requirements. These standards are in place to ensure the safety of children," she said after launching the plaque registration for Taska Seri Kandi today.

Nancy acknowledged that operators often face challenges in meeting these requirements, particularly in states like Sarawak, where additional oversight by local authorities is required.

"To assist operators, the Welfare Department reviews applications to identify areas where compliance is needed.

"Our officers also liaise with relevant authorities to clarify requirements and explore ways for operators to address them," she explained.

She added that while the ministry cannot bypass or waive regulations, it strives to support operators by providing recommendations and guidance to navigate the process, including tackling cost-intensive tasks like submitting detailed plans.
