Childcare centres to display registration details for transparency

KUALA LUMPUR: Childcare centres registered with the Social Welfare Department will soon be provided with plaques to display their details, including their registration number, a senior minister said.

"This will allow parents and guardians to easily scan and check important details, such as the registration expiry date, ensuring greater transparency and accountability," Women, Family, and Community Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri told the NST yesterday.

Nancy said all registered childcare centres would be provided with the plaques from January 2025.

Nancy said that the plaques which would incorporate QR codes or barcodes would provide parents access to key information about the particular centre.

Childcare centres play a vital role in supporting children's development and well-being, providing a safe and nurturing environment while parents are at work.

A recent investigation by the New Straits Times found that more than half of 11 childcare centres visited across Kuala Lumpur had not displayed their Social Welfare Department (JKM) registration number, as required by the ministry.

The investigation also revealed that some centres were not registered with the department at all.

Nevertheless, Nancy said her ministry was committed to ensuring all registered childcare centres display their registration details.

In December 2024, the minister announced that all childcare centres (taska) registered under JKM would be required to display their registration number at their premises, effective Jan 1, 2025.
