JOHOR BARU: Despite police warnings not to circulate footage of a man shot multiple times in front of a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah yesterday (Jan 8), the video has gone viral.
The 40-year-old victim had been at the restaurant with friends when the tragic incident occurred.
Johor police chief, Datuk M. Kumar, confirmed that the victim succumbed to four gunshot wounds.
He assured the public that the shooting was an isolated incident and not indicative of broader safety concerns in Johor.
He also urged the public to refrain from speculating or spreading misinformation that could disrupt the investigation or cause unnecessary anxiety and unrest.
"Do not spread rumours or make wild speculation that would lead to unnecessary fear," he said.
However, a 30-second closed-circuit television footage of the alleged shooting shows a man wearing a light blue windbreaker, a full-face black crash helmet, a swing bag across his chest, and gloves, walking towards a man talking on his phone in front of the restaurant.
The clip, without audio, captures the suspect approaching his target from behind slowly before firing several shots into the victim's back. Although the victim collapsed, the suspect continued shooting before fleeing the scene. His cool, collected manner led to online speculation that he could be a hired assassin.
Police remain tight-lipped and decline to elaborate further on the case, citing ongoing murder investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The 40-year-old victim was shot four times around noon while having lunch with friends. He had walked out of the restaurant to take a call before the broad daylight attack took place.
Earlier, restaurant patrons claimed they heard a motorcycle approaching before several loud bangs were heard. They then saw a man collapsing to the ground.
