BUKIT MERTAJAM: A motorcyclist died in an accident after his neck was snagged by a snapped telecommunications cable, causing him to lose control.
The incident happened in Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam here, about 5pm yesterday (Jan 7).
Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said a lorry crane driven by a 20-year-old man was travelling from Kulim to Bukit Mertajam when the crane got caught in a telecommunications cable.
He said the cable fell on the road and the motorcyclist, in his 40s, who was travelling in the opposite direction, could not avoid it.
"The cable snagged the victim's neck, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle and crash on the road.
"The motorcyclist sustained severe neck injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene."
Helmi said the victim's remains were taken to Bukit Mertajam Hospital for a post-mortem.
He said the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court issued a three-day remand order starting today (Jan 8) for the lorry crane driver to assist in the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous or reckless driving.
"We are appealing to any witnesses of the incident to come forward," Helmi said.
"Information can be directed to traffic investigation officer Inspector Mohd Ikhmal Mohd Shokri at 016-250 0386 or 04-538 2222."
