29 NGOs to implement RM11mil urban economic empowerment programme [UPDATED]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has chosen 29 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide entrepreneurship training and guidance to more than 1,000 entrepreneurs from the Bottom 40 per cent (B40) income group.

The ministry said approval letters had been handed over to the NGOs for the implementation of the Urban Community Economic Empowerment Programme (PEKB).

"The Housing and Local Government Ministry has been allocated RM11 million for the implementation of the PEKB in 2025, which is expected to benefit 1,060 participants from the B40 group, the lowest-income households," the ministry said.

The handover ceremony for the approval letters was officiated by Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu.

The programme aims to fight extreme poverty in urban areas by giving B40 participants entrepreneurship training for seven days to help them better manage their business.

The programme also aims to help participants boost their revenue and improve their standard of living.

"Participants are provided with business tools after completing the training to allow them to start their businesses.

"The appointed NGOs will monitor the participants' businesses for six months to ensure they can make at least RM750 a month, which is above the current poverty line income per capita."

The ministry has allocated RM174 million to the programme since 2013, successfully training 16,955 entrepreneurs.
