KUALA LUMPUR: Police have warned the public not to take part in any illegal gatherings or assemblies seeking for pardons, urging people to follow the proper legal channels instead.
In a statement today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told the public to respect the royal decree by the King of Malaysia regarding the prerogative powers outlined in Articles 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution.
"The Federal Constitution clearly states that any party seeking Pardon must apply to the Pardons Board, not by conducting gatherings or other forms of channels which do not follow the legal procedures," he said.
Razarudin said the pardon request should not be pursued through any illegal assemblies or gatherings, in the presence of the Article 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution.
"In line with the royal statement and in the interest of preserving public order and safety, we urge the public to refrain from participating in any illegal gatherings."
Razarudin also called on all Malaysians to continue supporting the principles of the Rukun Negara, particularly the sovereignty of the law, courtesy, and decency, which are the foundation for the country's prosperity and harmony.
Earlier, it was reported that the 'Solidarity with Datuk Seri Najib Razak' gathering is expected to take place on Jan 6 at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
