Nation's security must remain top priority, says IGP in New Year's message

KUALA LUMPUR: The police force must always be prepared to ensure the nation's security remains intact, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

In his New Year's message, Razarudin said the police must not become complacent with the current peace and stability the country has achieved, as such attitudes could lead to incompetence.

He also urged the police to equip themselves with a broad range of competencies in modern policing skills.

"Malaysia will also officially assume the Chairmanship of Asean on Jan 1, 2025, positioning the country as the focal point for hosting international programmes. Hence, I urge all members of the Sang Sangka Biru to strengthen their integrity as enforcement officers, dedicate themselves to fulfilling responsibilities, adhere to regulations, live modestly, remain steadfast in doing good, and endure criticism with patience," he said.

He also said the force has grown stronger and more adaptable in addressing evolving criminal threats driven by technological advancements and an unpredictable regional security environment.

"Their (police) success in overcoming numerous challenges can be attributed to their experience, enhanced capabilities and the steadfast loyalty of the police to the King and the nation."

At the same time, Razarudin also thanked the force for their contributions in 2024, which indirectly bolstered Malaysia's international standing, including the country's 10th-place ranking in the 2024 Global Peace Index out of 163 countries.

"In the blink of an eye, the year 2024 has come to an end, leaving behind challenges, trials and moments of both joy and sorrow for the police. The force's capability and efficiency were tested in handling high-profile cases, especially in areas like human resources, logistics, governance and technology, among others. The year also marked remarkable achievements for the police due to the tireless efforts of every department in fulfilling their respective functions.

"In this regard, heartfelt gratitude is extended to all members of the police for their dedication, contributions, sacrifices and unwavering spirit in driving various efforts and initiatives to address security threats and the increasingly complex global uncertainties."

Razarudin also expressed gratitude to the government for its commitment to the police force, which was demonstrated through various initiatives aimed at boosting morale. These include upgrading police housing and premises, strengthening human resources and logistics, enhancing border security, and increasing civil servant salaries.

"These efforts align with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani to ensure a harmonious ecosystem, supported by a creative, respectful and compassionate workforce for the sustainability of the police force. In this regard, the police top leadership and I urge all members of the force to express their gratitude through commitment and solidarity in every initiative and responsibility entrusted to us for the nation.

"Special appreciation also goes to all parties at the international, ministerial, departmental, governmental, and private agency levels, as well as non-governmental organisations and all layers of society, for their support and collaboration in strengthening our security framework for the well-being of the people."
