KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is set to expand its enforcement efforts through digital means and explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to more effectively identify traffic offenders.
RTD director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the initiative aims to boost enforcement efficiency and reduce road traffic violations, ensuring improved road safety nationwide.
"The use of advanced technology, such as AI, will enable RTD to strengthen enforcement and minimise violations. This is part of our broader strategy to ensure road safety," he said in a statement today.
In addition to leveraging technology, he said RTD will also intensify enforcement against high-risk offences that contribute to accidents and road fatalities. "Enforcement officers will conduct continuous inspections at strategic locations, particularly on highways and areas with high accident rates."
He said RTD will also launch large-scale public awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.
"These programmes will target young drivers and high-risk road users, focusing on critical aspects such as seatbelt use, safe driving speeds, and responsible behavior on the road," he said.
He added that the department is collaborating with other authorities to enhance road infrastructure across the country and ensure all vehicles on the road meet prescribed safety standards. "Regular inspections and strict safety checks, especially for public and commercial vehicles, will continue to be a priority," he added.
Aedy Fadly said RTD will strengthen its partnerships with transport companies and industry associations to ensure compliance.
"With stricter measures for commercial vehicles such as buses and lorries, we aim to reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles on the road," he said.
