MANJUNG: A newborn baby, with its umbilical cord still attached, was found in bushes behind a surau in Kampung Permatang, Sitiawan, here yesterday.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman said police received a call regarding the matter at 6.54pm yesterday.
"Police investigations found that the baby boy was left in the bushes, wrapped in cloth. The baby was discovered by one of the surau committee members who was cleaning the surau's surroundings.
"The committee member heard the sound of a baby crying and followed the noise, leading to the discovery of the newborn.
"The baby has been referred to Seri Manjung Hospital for further treatment," he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment.
Hasbullah added that police are working to locate the baby's mother.
