IPOH: A newborn girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, was found abandoned near dustbins in Titi Serong, Parit Buntar, yesterday.
Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said that the baby was discovered in a basin and wrapped in a towel by a passerby.
"Police received information at 4.50pm yesterday that a baby girl had been found by the roadside, near a workshop and dustbins.
"A man and his friends, who were walking nearby, suddenly heard a soft crying sound. They approached the area and found the baby in the basin, wrapped in a towel.
"They immediately took the baby to the Welfare Department, and the department's officer subsequently filed a police report at the Tanjung Piandang police station," he said.
He said this in a press conference at Perak police contingent headquarters here, today.
Azizi added that the baby was found behind the dustbins and in a weak condition.
"Initial investigations revealed that the baby weighed 2.1 kg and had bite marks, believed to be from ants, on her body.
"There are several CCTVs installed in the area, and we will obtain the footage to aid in the investigation," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing the birth of a child with the intention of abandoning the baby.
