TUMPAT: Members of the public flocked to a sales event organised by flood-affected traders in Pengkalan Kubor today.
The sales, with discounts of 20 to 50 per cent, are available as the traders want to clear their stocks of damaged items.
One of them, Nordiani Sharif, said she began organising the sales on Dec 6.
"Almost all goods sold at my shop were damaged due to the recent flood. Therefore, I decided to sell them at cheaper prices," said the 31-year-old.
Nordiani, who has been operating the business for about five years, sells basic household items such as mattresses, blankets, and bedsheets.
Meanwhile, Sharif Abdullah, 53, the owner of a furniture and carpet shop, said his shop had been hit by about 0.5m of floodwaters.
Sharif said he set aside the losses as long as the flood-damaged items could help flood victims in need.
"Not all the items were submerged in the flood. Some remained dry, but we are still selling them at low prices to assist those affected by the floods," he said.
Sharif said he and other traders plan to end the sales on Dec 21.
Checks at the area showed that crowds of people were taking advantage of the weekend to shop at the clearance sales.
A customer, Munirah Ismaili Abdul, 47, said she takes advantage of the situation every time there is a flood by shopping at premises that have been flooded and are selling items at clearance prices.
"I'm a local here, so I know the original prices. It is true that the auctioned goods are being sold at very low prices," she added
