Malaysia begins first green energy supply to Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has commenced the first cross-border supply of green electricity to Singapore, delivering 50 megawatts (MW) of clean energy.

This is part of a Renewable Energy Supply Agreement signed between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd on Dec 9.

The event, witnessed by Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir took place at TNB's National Load Dispatch Centre in Bangsar.

The ceremony was also attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), the Energy Commission, and TNB.

"TNB, as the national utility company, is responsible for transmitting green electricity from Malaysia's power grid to Singapore's, leveraging the existing interconnected network," the ministry said in a statement.

Sembcorp Power, the licensed importer of electricity in Singapore, will facilitate the distribution within Singapore.

The supply of green electricity follows an Energy Exchange Malaysia (Enegem) bidding process in June 2024. This initiative is part of Petra's Cross-Border Electricity Sales for Renewable Energy Scheme (CBES RE).

"Petra is confident that this cross-border green electricity supply will support Malaysia's energy transition aspirations and contribute to regional power integration efforts through the Asean Power Grid initiative, which is one the country's primary agenda as the Asean chair in 2025 " the statement added.
