SHAH ALAM: Newly elected Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said that the appointment of Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general would be formally endorsed at the coalition's upcoming Supreme Council meeting on Dec 9.
Hamzah, who currently holds the position of PN secretary-general, said that the coalition's constitution granted the PN chairman the authority to appoint the secretary-general.
He said that once the appointment is confirmed by chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, it would be officially endorsed during the meeting.
"We hope that once the appointment is endorsed, all parties will support the decision, putting an end to any speculation surrounding the position," he said during a press conference following the launch of the Bersatu Wings General Assembly today.
Hamzah acknowledged that, in a coalition comprising millions of members from Pas, Bersatu, and other parties, differing aspirations were natural.
"What matters is that, at the leadership level, no issues arise," he said.
Earlier, media reports indicated that Muhyiddin had confirmed Azmin's appointment as both Bersatu and PN secretary-general.
However, PAS MP Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaari clarified that the appointment had yet to be formally discussed in a coalition meeting.
Pas Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden had also proposed Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan for the role but later said that he would accept whoever was appointed.
Hamzah will step down from his secretary-general position to take up his new role as Bersatu deputy president, following his victory in the party polls earlier this month.
