LANGKAWI: The National Art Gallery is committed to transforming Langkawi into an international hub for contemporary art activities, specifically targeting the tech-savvy Generation Z (Gen Z).
Its director-general, Amerrudin Ahmad, said Langkawi has unique advantages as a centre providing young artists with access to collaborate, create, and exchange ideas with one another.
"We are aware that visitors to this island are not just here for leisure. Among them are social media influencers, freelancers, digital nomads, and influential young artists.
"Langkawi is an ideal location for developing this hub, which will also be the first of its kind in the country," he told reporters after the opening of the Sunyi Exhibition and the Young Contemporaries 2024 Symposium at the Old Kuah Hospital here last night.
The event was opened by Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry secretary-general Datuk Roslan Abdul Rahman.
Amerrudin said the exhibition, featuring 11 young artists, to run for 10 days until Nov 24, showcasing works themed around 'silence.'
"The participating artists include Alvin Lau, Arikwibowo Amril, Azam Aris, Fauzan Fuad, Hannah Moujing, Khabir Roslan, Ng Yi Kee, Ryan Tang, Sim Hoi Ling, Teo Wey Yinn, and Ahmad Rajaie.
"The symposium also brings together renowned figures such as Azzad Diah Ahmad Zabidi, Wong Hoy Cheong, Moelyono, Dr Tisna Sanjaya, and Muhammad Hazrin Abdul Malek@Moktar," he said.
