KUALA LUMPUR: Former Penang deputy chief minister Tan Sri Ibrahim Saad passed away peacefully today. He was 78.
Ibrahim who served as Penang deputy chief minister from 1990 to 1995, and even took on the role of being the current Prime Minister's former political secretary before, had passed away at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital here, this evening.
Ibrahim's passing was confirmed to Bernama by his son.
Ibrahim had also served as the former Bukit Mertajam Umno chief, Tasek Gelugor MP, deputy transport minister and Malaysian envoy to the Philippines throughout his career.
He was also instrumental in helping the Malays in Penang prosper when he was deputy chief minister in the early 90s.
Ibrahim was also the former secretary-general of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). He served as FAM secretary-general from 2005 to 2007, was a key figure in the development and modernisation of Malaysian football.
"My heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Ibrahim, who was also the vice-president and secretary-general of FAM. May the late Ibrahim be blessed and I pray that his family remains strong in this difficult time," said FAM executive committee member Christopher Raj.
Ibrahim was pivotal in promoting professionalism within the national football association, which helped elevate the game on and off the field.
Before taking on administrative roles, Ibrahim was a prominent footballer, playing for Perlis in the 1980s, where he made a significant impact with 31 goals in 51 appearances.
His passion for football continued throughout his life, influencing his work with FAM and beyond.
In addition to his contributions to football, Ibrahim was also highly involved in the Olympic movement, serving as the vice-president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia from 2007 to 2009. His leadership extended to various other roles outside of sports, including his service as Penang's Deputy Chief Minister (1990-1995), Deputy Transport Minister (1990-1999), and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's office (1995-1999).
Ibrahim's passing leaves a void in both the sporting world and public service, where his legacy of dedication, leadership and professionalism will be remembered for years to come.
It is understood that the deceased is currently at their residence in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, here, and will be taken to the At-Taqwa Mosque in Taman Tun Dr Ismail at 9am tomorrow (Saturday) for funeral prayers.
Ibrahim will be laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara cemetery.
