Pregnant woman rescued from suicide attempt, blames loan sharks

KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant woman was rescued from her attempt to jump into Sungai Perak at the Irrigation and Drainage Department square in Teluk Intan today.

The 38-year-old woman, who is three months pregnant, was allegedly harassed by loan sharks.

'Utusan Malaysia' reported that the woman was pressured to pay about RM4,000, but she claimed she had never taken out any loan.

The money-lending syndicate allegedly harassed the woman and her family members with repeated phone calls.

Teluk Intan Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Ismail Mohd Yunus said members of the public noticed the woman's suicide attempt and called the department for help at 9.04am.

He said when the team arrived at the scene, the victim was in distress and crying.

"The victim tried to jump into the river again, but we calmed her down. She was struggling and in tears.

"After more than an hour of persuasion and counselling, the victim calmed down. We handed her over to police.

"The operation ended at 10.28am," he was quoted as saying.
