Perkeso reviewing 24-hour worker protection scheme, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR: A new social protection framework that provides a 24-hour social security protection, even outside working hours, is being reviewed by the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso).

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad today said the new framework would involve 7.6 million workers and Malaysians.

"The framework is aimed at bridging the inequality gap and ensuring that no worker is left without protection."

He said this during the minister's question time in Dewan Rakyat.

He said this in response to V. Sivakumar (Pakatan Harapan-Batu Gajah), who had enquired about the launch date of a social insurance scheme that protected low-income workers, following the rise in the cost of living that had reduced their ability to obtain private health insurance.

At the same time, Rahman said Perkeso provided social protection insurance through the Employment Injury Scheme and the Disablement Scheme to insured individuals eligible under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969, the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017 and the Housewives' Social Security Act 2022.

"The Employment Injury Scheme provides medical benefits, temporary disability benefits, permanent disability benefits, dependents' benefits, constant care allowances, funeral expenses and physical or vocational rehabilitation benefits.

"The Disablement Scheme has benefits for disability pensions, disability assistance, constant care allowances, survivor pensions, physical or vocational rehabilitation benefits, funeral expenses, educational benefits and medical benefits."
