Steven Sim takes bold step to adopt talented youth

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has stepped in to support 20-year-old Teck Qing, whom he has decided to adopt in order to help him pursue his dreams.

Teck Qing's story came to Sim's attention when he visited the minister's office seeking assistance.

Abandoned by both parents at the age of 5, Teck Qing has moved between orphanages throughout his childhood.

At just 12 years old, he began working as a kitchen helper, washing dishes, and has since taken on various roles, including promoter, tuition teacher, and judo coach.

Despite facing significant challenges, Teck Qing remained dedicated to his studies and was accepted into a bio-process course at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

He also represented Penang in judo at the recent Sukma Games in Sarawak, finishing fifth. His ultimate goal is to win a gold medal for Malaysia at the SEA Games.

Sim expressed deep empathy for Teck Qing's hardships, reflecting on the young man's strength.

"He faced all of life's challenges alone, while I was the one left feeling sorrowful. He told me his story calmly, yet I couldn't hold back my tears. As a parent, I can't imagine my child having to endure such loneliness," Sim shared in a recent Facebook post.

In his commitment to support Teck Qing, Sim said, "I told him to always look ahead. I intend

to adopt him and will help him until he completes his university studies. I will cover his fees, and if he receives a PTPTN loan, that can be used for his daily expenses. I'll provide him with a monthly allowance so he can focus solely on his studies. When he succeeds, all I ask is that he gives back to society."

Teck Qing was visibly moved by Sim's offer of support.

Additionally, Sim purchased a new motorcycle for Teck Qing to use both for university and his part-time job.

"You are not alone anymore. I will support you!" Sim assured him.
