JOHOR BARU: The proof-of-concept trial period for the MyRentas immigration clearance system between Malaysia and Singapore has been extended until next month.
MyRentas is part of the immigration department's digital transformation efforts to streamline the daily commute for Malaysians traveling from Johor Baru to Singapore.
The extension will allow the home affairs ministry and the immigration department to further evaluate the system's effectiveness in expediting immigration processing at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB).
Jati Jana (M) Sdn Bhd chief operating officer, Azril Rizal Abdullah said that travelers at BSI currently utilise the MyRentas QR code system, while those at KSAB use MyTrip. Jati Jana is the vendor for MyRentas.
"Since the trial began, MyRentas has facilitated nearly two million transactions, which reduced peak hour waiting times significantly for bus passengers from 120 minutes to just 15 minutes," he said in a statement, today.
The data was included in a written reply uploaded to parliament's website in July, the statement read.
Azril Rizal said that MyRentas had reduced clearance times from 30-45 seconds to under five seconds per user.
The average usage ratio indicates that each user had used MyRentas 29 times since its launch.
He added that the system is now ready for implementation at car lanes and could be expanded for Singaporean travelers, with potential integration with the neighbouring countries' systems.
"We will ensure that MyRentas users benefit from the system's efficiency, making it a preferred choice due to its smooth operation," he added.
MyRentas operates on QR code technology equipped with advanced security features, including facial recognition and liveness detection to prevent spoofing, as well as dynamic QR codes that ensure only eligible users access the service.
The QR codes comply with ISO/IEC 18004 international standards.
The system was launched by the immigration department on June 1, aiming to alleviate congestion at the Malaysia-Singapore border, particularly at BSI.
Currently, MyRentas is available only for Malaysian bus passengers at the Sultan Iskandar Building. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
at the Johor-Singapore Causeway— the world's busiest land crossing — was designed to reduce congestion.
Johor is the first state in Malaysia to implement this system at its international checkpoints, following similar efforts in countries such as China, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Germany, and Singapore.
