KLUANG: Dressed in their uniforms, soldiers and their spouses queued an hour before the Dewan Mahkota polling station within the army's Mahkota camp was opened for early voting today.
Some 4,510 early voters, consisting of staff from the armed forces and their registered spouses, are eligible to vote in the Mahkota by-election.
Of 4,510 early voters, 3,865 are expected to cast their ballots at the Mahkota camp. The remaining 645 voters from Batu 3 Camp will vote at two designated polling stations at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sultan Sir Ibrahim.
All polling centres were opened between 8am and 5pm.
Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, is expected to hold a press conference at 10am to provide updates on the early voting process, which is taking place at Dewan Mahkota.
The Mahkota by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
The by-election was called following the death of its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.
The Mahkota constituency, which falls under the Kluang parliamentary, has a total of 66,318 registered voters, with 20 polling stations set to open this Saturday.
