ALOR STAR: The Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah today visited flood evacuees in Kota Setar district.
Sultan Sallehuddin was given a briefing on the flood situation upon arriving at the temporary flood relief centre in Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium and spent about an hour mingling with flood victims.
The Sultan of Kedah also presented goodies and cash aid from the Sultan of Kedah's Trustee Fund to 170 families at the flood evacuation centre.
Present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, State Secretary Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali and state Welfare, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Halimaton Shaadiah Saad.
One of the evacuees, Natrah Saad, 64, from Alor Merah, said she was touched by Sultan Sallehuddin's concern about the flood victims' welfare.
"We are excited and touched by His Majesty's visit.
"It showed that our Sultan really cares for his subjects," said Natrah, who has a nine-year-old grandson Mohamad Afiq Ramadhan Abdullah born with cerebral palsy.
Sultan Sallehuddin also spent time checking on Norma Saad, 57, who was bedridden after being bitten by a cobra snake at her home in Kampung Alor Gunung a month ago.
Meanwhile, Norizan said Sultan Sallehuddin had advised the flood evacuees to look after their health and safety.
The flood disaster which began last Monday was the second worst to hit the state after 2010.
Seven out of 11 districts in the state were affected, with the highest number of evacuees recorded on Saturday, exceeding 8,400 people.
Among the hardest-hit districts are Kota Setar, with over 4,000 evacuees, followed by Kubang Pasu, Pokok Sena, and Pendang."
