KOTA BARU: The public has been urged to refrain from conducting open burning following hot weather in the state.
State Department of Environment director Wan Aminordin Wan Kamaruddin said open burning, if left unchecked, the fire could go out of control and make the situation worse.
"I would like to remind the public not to engage in any open burning as it will make things worse.
"Those who commit open burning can be compounded for breaching Section 29(A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Amendment 2024)," he added.
Asked about the recent fatal accident involving two motorcyclists, he said the case was under police investigation.
Last Saturday at 5.30pm, two motorcyclists were killed when their bikes collided with each other at RBI Jaya Canopy, Jalan Salor-Pasir Mas, near here.
The two, aged 28 and 79, died on the spot. A video had been circulated showing one of the victims attempting to avoid smoke coming from a site of burning rubbish before crashing into the other.
His family had called on the public to stop sharing the video.
Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud today said police were still investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
