KUALA LUMPUR: The government is willing to consider compensation for the family of G. Vijaya Lakshmi, an Indian tourist who fell into a sinkhole and went missing on Jalan Masjid India here.
"I have spoken to the Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy. He has shown gratitude for the efforts conducted since day one", said Federal Territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa at a press conference today.
This was after her announcement of the end of the search-and-rescue (SAR) operation for G. Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, who fell into a sinkhole on the street on Aug 23.
"He (the high commissioner) understands how hard the SAR team have tried.
"Compensation for the victim's family will be discussed," Dr Zaliha said.
Last night, efforts to locate the victim at the site of the sinkhole yielded no results, despite the detection of an unusual object a meter underground using ground penetrating radar.
