Langkawi cable car operator hit with RM300,000 loss from water column

LANGKAWI: Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd, operator of the Langkawi SkyCab cable car service at Oriental Village, has incurred RM300,000 losses in damages following a water column phenomenon that struck on Friday.

In a statement, the company revealed that RM200,000 of the losses were due to damage to IT equipment, SkyBoutique warehouse contents, and other assets.

"An additional RM100,000 was incurred from infrastructure damage at Oriental Village and Telaga Tujuh Eco-Forest Park," it said.

The phenomenon was triggered by the overflow from Sungai Perangin, which was unable to manage the intense rainfall.

"The overflow caused a water column to impact Oriental Village, starting around 1.10pm and continuing for approximately an hour and a half," it added.

Panorama Langkawi's Emergency Response Team (ERT) was activated immediately.

"Our ERT followed the Standard Operating Procedure for such disasters," the company said.

"Visitors were promptly evacuated from Oriental Village, and cable car operations were temporarily halted."

The statement also said that after the rain ceased around 3pm, ERT staff conducted cleaning operations, allowing the cable car service to resume normal operations the next day.

"We took swift action to ensure the safety of our visitors and restore services as quickly as possible," the company added.

On Friday, a vehicle parked near Telaga Tujuh Waterfall was reported to have been swept into a river by the strong currents.

Several other vehicles in the area were also damaged, with water levels reaching up to 0.5 metres deep.
