PONTIAN: Police have identified the driver of a BMW who allegedly lost control of his car, leading to a collision with three other vehicles that claimed the life of a 33-year-old man at Km42.5 of Jalan Johor Baru-Batu Pahat here this morning.
District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the 1am accident occurred near the Jeram Batu junction in Pekan Nanas and left seven people injured.
Preliminary police investigations indicated that the BMW driver, who was heading towards Pekan Nenas, lost control while navigating a curve.
The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided with three oncoming vehicles — a Proton Saga, a Perodua Kelisa and a Perodua Axia.
The Kelisa driver, a 33-year-old man, died at the scene from head injuries.
His 32-year-old wife sustained severe head injuries and a fractured right arm. Four others in the Saga and the driver of the Axia also suffered injuries.
The BMW driver, a 43-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, including head swelling and chest pain.
All seven victims were rushed to Pontian Hospital for treatment, while the deceased was sent to the hospital's forensic department for an autopsy.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
Shofee said the BMW driver had no prior criminal record and was tested for drugs.
He had been remanded to assist in further investigations.
