KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group will temporarily reduce flights for Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal until December amid a string of disruptions involving the company's airlines.
In a statement, MAG managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the reduction in its network was needed to execute corrective measures to ensure the long-term reliability of its fleet and minimise disruptions.
"We are working closely with our aircraft and engine manufacturers, and a wide range of suppliers to comprehensively address supply chain and technical issues."
He said MAG has faced challenges as part of the continuing normalisation of global aviation operations after the Covid-19 pandemic.
These challenges relate to supply chain constraints and manpower challenges.
He said MAG was also affected by delayed deliveries of new aircraft, leading to fewer aircraft being available for operations than planned.
"MAG deeply regrets the significant inconvenience the flight cancellations will have on our passengers.
"Ensuring our aircraft are in optimal condition for safe and efficient operations whilst minimising potential disruptions is our utmost and urgent priority."
Izham said MAG was committed to strengthening its operations and that the company appreciates its customers' understanding as it works through the challenges.
"Affected customers will receive an email notification related to the cancellation of their flight followed by an updated itinerary.
"Passengers may also make immediate changes to their booking based on the preferred alternative, by using the 'My Booking' function on our website."
Izham also apologised for the disruptions passengers have faced to date.
Yesterday, former transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong called on the government to investigate and assist Malaysia Airlines with the technical issues facing the national career after six incidents in the past two months.
On Aug 16, MAG apologised for increases in flight delays and cancellations affecting Malaysia Airlines and Firefly.
