SINGAPORE: Singaporean motorists with unpaid traffic summonses in Malaysia will face enforcement action once the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system comes into force.
The Road Transport Department said between Oct 1 and Dec 31, enforcement of the VEP will be phased and foreign vehicles with unpaid fines will still be allowed to enter and leave Malaysia.
According to a report in The Straits Times, the department will focus on "advocacy" during this period.
However, from Jan 1, 2025, full enforcement action will be implemented.
Still, foreign vehicle owners with outstanding summonses are encouraged to pay outstanding fines from Oct 1 before leaving Malaysia.
It was previously reported that Singaporean motorists have accumulated 35,011 unpaid traffic fines in Malaysia since 1990. These fines are worth an estimated RM3.5 million.
The enforcement of the VEP system will allow the authorities to track every car's traffic offences.
Malaysia will enforce the VEP on all foreign vehicles entering from Singapore on Oct 1.
Foreign vehicle owners who fail to comply with VEP regulations can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed for up to six months.
