Con artist walks away with RM6,000 necklace belonging to elderly woman

ALOR STAR: An elderly woman lost a necklace worth RM6,000 to a suspected con artist who offered traditional treatment to the victim at a health clinic here yesterday.

Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said in the 8am incident, the victim was approached by an unknown man offering traditional treatment while she was waiting for her turn at the clinic.

"The victim refused the offer, but the man was determined to coax her before leaving a few minutes later. When the victim was done at the clinic, she realised her gold necklace missing.

"She suspected that the man had stolen the jewellery as he had earlier commented that the necklace was loose and pretended to tighten it," she said in a statement today.

Salawati said that the victim subsequently lodged a report at about 12.20pm yesterday.

"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Police are searching for the suspect, a man approximately 5 feet tall (152cm) and around 60 years old.

"Therefore, police request the cooperation of the public to come forward with any information regarding the suspect," she added.
