JOHOR BARU: Kampung Teluk Jawa and Senibong fishermen reported multiple crocodiles' sightings while fishing, yesterday.
Southern Johor Fishermen's Association chairman Azli Mohd Aziz said several fishermen lodged complaints on the reptiles' presence along Sungai Masai. It is believed the crocodiles went to the area in search of food.
"Some Senibong residents and visitor also spotted the crocodiles, which has drawn concerns as Senibong is a popular tourist destination among foreigners," he said.
The fishermen's association recently cleaned containers for mussel farming between Teluk Jawa and Senibong Cove, which may have prompted the crocodiles to seek new shelter and food sources.
"Last night, several Orang Asli fishermen from Kuala Masai and Teluk Jawa surveyed the area and confirmed the presence of four crocodiles.
"According to the information we received, there are about four crocodiles in the vicinity," he said, today, adding a police report was lodged at the Pasir Gudang station yesterday.
Orang Asli men also attempted to capture an adult crocodile weighing over 100kg but were unsuccessful as the nets were damaged due to the depth of the waters and danger in the area.
Azli advised fishermen in areas around Kampung Bakar Batu and Pasir Gudang not to take matters into their own hands, as it could risk their safety.
He also urged them to exercise caution when going fishing or any water-related activities.
"We have observed children swimming in the river near Senibong, which is extremely dangerous at this time.
"We hope the relevant agencies will take immediate action to ensure the safety of villagers and fishermen," he added.
Meanwhile, Kampung Orang Asli Kuala Masai Tok Batin Kelah Lah suggested that the crocodiles might be without shelter due to land reclamation activities and the cleaning of mussel farming containers.
"Previously, we had a single crocodile encounter, but now there are many more, and it has alarmed the fishermen.
"The crocodiles are not static in one area but are roaming around," he said, adding discussions with local community leaders were held to ensure that actions are taken immediately.
"For now, the community awaits the response and intervention of the relevant authorities to address the safety concerns raised by these recent crocodile sightings," he said when contacted today.
