KUANTAN: The sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has expressed concern over farm land in the state being leased to foreigners.
He cited plots of land in Cameron Highlands, which had been leased and rented out to farmers but were now being leased to foreigners.
"Due to greed and money, we compromise our integrity and let the land in the state to be ravaged.
"What is more disappointing is the foreigners taking over the role of 'tauke' (business owner) who control the supplies and prices in the agricultural industry, leading to the emergence of cartels that damaged the state and the country's economy.
"I want the government to monitor this activity and I want strict enforcement action to ensure such activities do not recur.
"Execute this responsibility with full integrity. Remember that our work and duty will be questioned," he said in his royal address at the investiture ceremony of state medals and awards, held in conjunction with his 65th birthday, at Balai Mahkota Istana Abdulaziz here today.
Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah led a list of 24 recipients of state honours.
Al-Sultan Abdullah urged people to work with the authorities by channelling information on any crime or misconduct, as this is a joint responsibility.
"I want the state government and authorities to do an in-depth study on the development plan in Cameron Highlands.
"Only a holistic, strict and sustainable approach will be able to save the highlands from any form of greed and irresponsible actions."
In congratulating state honours recipients, the Pahang ruler said the awards are a duty entrusted upon them.
"I would like to emphasise that the awards carry a huge responsibility; it requires you to continue to protect values of loyalty, honour and faireness in all actions.
"Receiving an award is not a reason to be arrogant and conceited."
Instead, the recipoents should be a good example for the people, he said.
He also said he would not hesitate to revoke the awards conferred if there were any misconduct on their part as it could tarnish the reputation of the royal institution and the country.
