Factory processing acrylic materials believed to be cause of pollution

KUALA LUMPUR: The odour pollution detected in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah was caused by a leak from the tank of a factory processing acrylic materials.

Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the tank leak caused the scheduled waste, Poly Methacrylic Acid (PMAA) , to flow into the drains and ditches leading to Sungai Kuang.

"We have immediately directed the premises to stop the discharge and carry out cleaning works.

"We have implemented early preventive measures by placing three bags of activated carbon (AC) in Sungai Kuang downstream of the factory premises for deodorisation purposes," she said.

She said an investigation will be conducted under Section 79(1) of the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) Enactment 1999 for further enforcement action against the parties involved.

"At the same time, the Department of Environment (DOE) and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) will also take related actions under their respective jurisdictions against the premises," she added.

Jamaliah said the Selangor state government and Luas will not compromise with any party that pollutes water sources, and strict action will be taken in accordance with the provisions of the Luas Enactment 1999.

Previously, it was reported that more than 1,000 areas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are facing water supply disruptions due to odour pollution detected in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah.

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has announced the temporary shutdown of the Rantau Panjang, Sungai Selangor Phase 1 (SSP1), Sungai Selangor Phase 2 (SSP2), and Sungai Selangor Phase 3 (SSP3) Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) as a result of this pollution.
