Factory workers evacuated after ammonia gas leak

KUALA LUMPUR: Workers at the NSK factory in Sungai Tua, Bandar Baru Selayang, had to be evacuated today due to an ammonia gas leak.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said the department's operations centre received at emergency call at 10.25am and immediately despatched a team of nine firefighters from the Selayang station to the scene.

Checks at the site revealed a leak coming from the factory's storage area.

Selayang station operations commander Shahrul Nizam Ramli confirmed that the leak came from a breach in one of the four ammonia gas cylinders in the storage area, the department said in a statement.

The team promptly evacuated the building and established a decontamination area to ensure safety.

A hazardous materials (Hazmat) team was called in to handle the situation by sealing the leaking valve, preventing the escape of gas.
