KUALA LUMPUR: The sale and display of tobacco products, including vapes, through vending machines are prohibited under the law, says the Health Ministry.
In a statement, the ministry said it took note of complaints about a vape vending machine on social media.
It said Section 10 of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations for Public Health Act prohibits selling and displaying all tobacco products.
"Regulations regarding sales, including through vending machines, are under review and will be enforced alongside the Act once approved."
The ministry also said the prohibition on the sale of vapes through vending machines is in line with the ban on the sale of cigarettes, cigars and loose tobacco through vending machines under the Tobacco Products Control Regulations.
Earlier this week, the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation criticised the sale of vapes through vending machines at a KL mall, describing it as "irresponsible" and a "violation" of public health laws.
Yesterday, NST reported that the vending machine had been removed from the premises after an inspection by Health Ministry officials.
The ministry today said it has advised the mall's management to stop operating the vape vending machines.
"They (mall management) have agreed and complied with this recommendation."
The ministry said it has begun briefing all its enforcement officers and local authorities nationwide on the prohibitions under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations for Public Health Act in preparation of its enforcement.
