KOTA KINABALU: The state government is studying solutions to resolve the imposition of congestion surcharge by shipping companies effective July 16.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor today said the cabinet had discussed the issue.
"We have asked the state industrial development and entrepreneurship minister and the minister responsible for port affairs to find a solution.
"We haven't received a report yet because the charges are imposed by companies, not the government.
"So we want to know how the government will resolve this issue."
He said this after closing a Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah event at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
Malaysia Shipping Corporation and MTT Shipping recently announced the imposition of a congestion surcharge due to significant delays in vessel turnaround times, which were affecting the supply chain.
The proposed surcharge ranged from RM500 to RM1,000, with an additional charge for shipper-owned container shipments.
Industrial stakeholders in Sabah have expressed concern about the surcharge.
