KUALA LUMPUR: A new strategic direction to revitalise Malaysia's mall industry has been unveiled in readying for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026).
Malaysian Shopping Mall Association (PPK Malaysia) president Phang Sau Lian said Malaysia's shopping malls have much to offer aside from shopping.
"The two key areas we will look into are Festive Tourism and Tourist Precincts.
"It includes our mall festive decorations as a popular attraction, cultural activities and food and entertainment that enhances the shopping experience in malls," he said in a statement.
Phang said PPK Malaysia aims to align the association's objectives with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture with VMY2026 on the horizon.
He said networking was equally crucial and was one of the strategic plans in gearing up malls in Malaysia for the campaign.
"PPK Malaysia will collaborate with ministries and government agencies on national sales campaigns and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic ties.
"The association is expanding its networking reach to include new retailers, business partners and practitioners through various events.
"These platforms facilitate learning, sharing and exploring industry solutions, such as short-term leases and flexible business hours for manpower optimisation," he said.
Phang added that they would continue to maintain a strong networking relationship with the Council of Asian Shopping Centres (CASC) member associations for ongoing regional sharing and learning, and encourage the organisation of regional conferences and overseas study tours.
"These initiatives will foster cross-border learning and collaborations, ultimately elevating the standards of malls in Malaysia to new heights.
"The association actively engages with authorities on new guidelines or policies impacting the industry to ensure fair practices," he said.
With digital innovation in mind, Phang said PPK Malaysia will integrate mobile applications into its systems to enhance communication and efficiency among its members.
"Our 2024-2026 roadmap reflects our commitment to driving innovation, fostering collaboration and advancing the interests of our members.
"The aim is to chart a course towards a prosperous future for Malaysia's shopping mall and retail sector," he said.
