Sabah motorist charged full price for diesel despite subsidies

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers have been told to check their receipts after a motorist in Sabah was charged the full price for diesel even though subsidies have not been rationalised in East Malaysia.

In a Facebook post, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry said diesel prices had been set to RM3.35 per litre only in Peninsular Malaysia following the rationalisation of subsidies on June 10.

"Sabah and Sarawak have been exempted (from the rationalisation exercise) and diesel prices there are still RM2.15 per litre."

It was responding to a social media posting from a user named Maskur Fidzwan Kure who advised users of diesel vehicles to check their receipts after he was charged RM3.35 per litre at a petrol station in Tawau, Sabah.

Maskur said petrol station owners in Sabah and Sarawak cannot raise prices as the two states were exempt from the rationalisation.

Commenting on Maskur's post, the ministry said this was why it was important for consumers to check their receipts.

"There is proof and you can seek compensation."

The ministry said the petrol station operator must sell diesel at the price set and return money owed to the user for their mistake.

Last month, Anwar announced that diesel subsidies would be rationalised in Peninsular Malaysia.

To mitigate sudden increases in the prices of goods and services, the government will continue providing diesel subsidies to traders who utilise diesel-based commercial vehicles.

Cash aid would also be given to users of diesel vehicles who needed them.

The rationalisation of subsidies will save the government approximately RM4 billion annually.
