Thunderstorms, strong winds and rain set to lash Langkawi, Johor, Melaka and Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR: Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected to lash several parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, starting at noon (12pm) today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning saying the affected areas includes Langkawi (Kedah), Tangkak, Muar, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru (Johor), along with Melaka.

The warning up to 1pm today also covers the waters off Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Terengganu and Sarawak.

"The forecasted strong winds up to 50km per hour with rough seas resulting in waves reaching heights of up to 3.5 pose a threat to small boats," it said today.

The department said heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected over the waters in Phuket, Straits of Melaka, Samui, Tioman, Condore, Bunguran, Reef North, Reef South, Layang-Layang, Labuan, Palawan, Sulu and Sulawesi till 1pm today.

"These areas will experience strong winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour with waves reaching heights of up to 3.5 metres, and the situation would be dangerous to small boats," read the statement.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia said for all shipping activities, strong southwest winds between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour with waves reaching heights of up to 3.5 metres are forecasted in the waters off Phuket, Condore (north), Reef North, Layang-Layang and Palawan till June 25.

MetMalaysia said the situation would be dangerous to small boats, sea recreation and sea sport activities.
