Azam Baki: No reports yet on Malay reserve land fraud, probe underway in Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has not received any report over Malay reserve land fraud.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said so far, the anti-graft body had only received one report from Perak.

"We have an isolated case that happened in Perak. No report received from other states as yet.

"It is a criminal offence to change the status of the Malay reserve land to freehold, of course, we will investigate (if there are similar reports lodged on it)," he told reporters after attending the pre-launch ceremony of a publishing project and integrity value implementation programme (anti-corruption), a joint venture between MACC and the Malaysia Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM), held at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre.

Present were Education director-general, Azman Adnan.

Yesterday, a managing director of a real estate company was remanded for four days, to assist in the investigation into the case involving the subdivision of Malay reserve land in Manjung, Perak.

The court granted a remand order against the male suspect in his 40s after allowing the application by the MACC.

A source said initial investigation found that the suspect was believed to have paid a bribe to a civil servant working in the land office in a state in the northern region to change the status of the Malay reserve land, resulting in the land covering an area of approximately 649.2ha, to be illegally transferred to non-Malay companies and individuals.

Meanwhile, on the "Wira Anti Rasuah" comic, Azam said it was a strategic collaboration initiative between MACC and ITBM to raise awareness and become a medium of anti-corruption education among primary school students by exposing corrupt practices and their effects on the community and the country.

"Wira Anti Rasuah" is the Malay translation of "Bribe Busters: A Trace Comic Book," originally published by Trace International. Trace International is a non-profit organisation based in Maryland, United States, dedicated to promoting anti-corruption standards worldwide.
