JOHOR BARU: Malaysians travelling to Singapore can begin using Quick Response (QR) codes for Immigration clearance at the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB), starting June 1.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced that the first phase of the QR code implementation will involve Malaysians travelling to Singapore by bus at BSI, and motorcyclists using the automated MBike Immigration clearance system at KSAB.
He added that the trial run of the first phase will take place over a three-month period before the system is expanded to private vehicle users under the second phase, followed by Singaporeans and other nationalities.
Fadillah said the introduction of the QR codes at BSI and KSAB will be a "game changer" in addressing congestion at both Malaysia-Singapore entry points.
"Starting June 1, Malaysians can use QR codes instead of a passport for Immigration clearance at (the CIQ) BSI and KSAB.
"The implementation of the system will reduce the waiting time for bus commuters at BSI during peak hours – from 120 minutes, to 15 minutes – an 83 per cent savings.
"For KSAB buses, the waiting time will be reduced from 90 minutes to 15 minutes, a 74 per cent savings," Fadillah told reporters after chairing the Special Committee Meeting to Address Congestion at the Johor Causeway here, today.
Present were Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Fadillah also said with the implementation of the QR codes, motorcyclists at BSI would cut down their waiting time, from 40 minutes to 30 minutes.
He added that the waiting time for motorcyclists at KSAB could also be reduced from 45 minutes to 30 minutes, a 23 per cent savings, with the use of the QR codes.
"For the QR code implementation starting June 1, users can opt for either the MySejahtera application, or download the MyTrip and MyDigital ID applications," he said.
On a related matter, Fadillah said during the meeting today, the government also agreed to form a technical committee to streamline bus movements at BSI and KSAB, to reduce waiting times at the two facilities.
"This is important because even if Immigration clearance is completed quickly, inefficient bus movements can still cause congestion at both entry points," he said.
