[UPDATED] Malaysia takes custody of 2 men released from Guantanamo Bay

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police have officially taken custody of Mohammed Farik Amin and Mohammed Nazir Lep today.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that the Home Ministry had directed the two individuals to undergo evaluation before entering a comprehensive rehabilitation programme aimed at reintegrating them into society.

"They were received in good health and they are grateful to be back on Malaysian soil and reunited with their families," he said.

He said that both of them displayed a positive attitude and were receptive to evaluation and rehabilitation.

"They have also expressed strong commitment to reintegrate as active, progressive members of society. Everyone deserves a second chance, and the police will ensure they succeed," he added.

It was reported earlier that the United States government handed over two Malaysians held in Guantanamo Bay for 18 years.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed Malaysia's acceptance of their return on human rights grounds.

The government has developed a comprehensive reintegration programme, which includes support, welfare, and health check-ups.
