2-year-old girl killed in motorcycle-truck collision in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: A girl died in an accident involving a motorcycle carrying her and three family members and a truck at Batu 4, Bulatan Jalan Pan Borneo, yesterday.

In the 2.15pm incident, the two-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Dzulbaharin Ismail said the motorcycle driven by the victim's father was heading towards Sandakan from Lahad Datu.

As they were about to enter the roundabout, a truck driven by a 59-year-old man suddenly emerged from the left side of the intersection, he said.

"Due to the close distance, the victim's father failed to avoid and continued, hitting the truck's front tire.

"As a result of the collision, the victim and her three other family members were thrown onto the road," he said in a statement today.

He said the victim's father, aged 47, brother, 3, and mother, 29, sustained injuries.

He said the injured victims were sent to Lahad Datu Hospital for immediate treatment.

"Blood samples from both the driver and the motorcyclist have been taken and sent to the Chemistry Department for alcohol and drug testing.

"Investigations are being conducted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.

He said those with information related to the incident can contact traffic investigator officer Inspector Muhammad Rasul Ramlee at 089-881225.
