SUBANG JAYA: The African suspect shot dead today is believed to be a member of a robbery gang that has been active since 2018 and responsible for RM8 million in losses.
The gang, believed to consist of 10 armed African men, is known for targeting victims through fraudulent transactions.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspect was killed in a shootout on Jalan PJS 9/1 this evening.
In the incident, which occurred around 7pm, two bullets fired by the suspect hit a police vehicle.
"This group is armed and highly dangerous," Shuhaily said. "We recovered a revolver, and the suspect fired five shots at police, but none struck the officers."
Authorities are continuing to track the gang, which remains active in the Klang Valley.
All border exit points have been alerted about the suspect, who may attempt to change passports, Shuhaily added.
He added that intelligence on the gang had been gathered by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor police contingents before being coordinated by Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department.
Shuhaily said police are still searching for the remaining members of the gang.
The group's modus operandi involves contacting victims through social media, offering transactions such as selling jewelry or exchanging foreign currency.
They typically arrange to meet victims at hotels and then lead them to a different location before attacking them on the road.
The suspect's body has been sent to Serdang Hospital for an autopsy.
