IPOH: Police arrested 11 people, including a pregnant woman, in a raid on two houses in Aulong, Taiping, suspected of being a scam call centre.
Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said "Op Khas Calling Centre" was carried out at 1.30pm on Wednesday.
Azizi said that the syndicate was believed to have been active for the past two weeks targeting Malaysians and Singaporean.
"With the arrest of seven men and four women who acted as operators, the police have managed to resolve at least 130 cases nationwide.
"Their modus operandi involved using social media and by establishing an operation centre.
"This syndicate would ask victims to purchase items. The victims would then be asked to promote the items to other buyers, with the promise of commissions ranging from three to 13 per cent within a short period," he said.
Azizi said this in a press conference at the Perak police headquarters here today.
He said items and valuables worth approximately RM500,000 were confiscated during the raids.
"Among them were laptops, 35 mobile phones, 98 bank cards, four gold bars, 18 pieces of jewellery, RM1,600 in cash, a watch, and five cars of various types," he said.
Azizi said 10 suspects had been remanded until Sunday, while the pregnant woman was remanded for a day.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Azizi also advised the public not to click on links or download any applications from unknown sources.
"Never make payments on behalf of unknown individuals as this may lead someone to inadvertently assist the syndicate in money laundering activities," he said.
