KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a local authority enforcement officer in Selangor for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes totalling approximately RM12,000.
The alleged bribes were in exchange for not taking action against a restaurant owner who had placed additional tables and chairs in the parking area of the restaurant.
According to sources, the male suspect, in his 40s, was detained yesterday evening.
"The suspect is believed to have been soliciting bribes since November 2023, demanding and receiving monthly cash payments of around RM2,000.
"Investigations also revealed that the suspect frequently sent messages via WhatsApp each month to the restaurant owner," the source said.
Meanwhile, when contacted, MACC Putrajaya Director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest.
He said the suspect had been released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded.
