It seems like it has become a trend for celebrities to show off their luxury possessions in the current era of social media.
There are celebrities-cum-entrepreneurs who consider the luxury that is highlighted as an inspiration for their followers on social media.
However, the wealth displayed on social media can also lead to losses when unwanted incidents occur such as being robbed and so on.
CHE TA
Actress and entrepreneur, Rozita Che Wan, better known as Che Ta, 51, said it all depends on the intention and purpose of a celebrity to show their affluence on social media.
"There are celebrities who show luxury to inspire and help others. But if the intention is to show off, it will not be good," she said.
Che Ta added that celebrities don't need to show off their affluence to attract more followers on social media.
"Sometimes, people want to see the other side of an artiste when they are outside. If they have always seen the artiste playing a bad character onscreen, the other side of the artiste reveals a good person.
"The other side of the artiste could also just be a lifestyle. If the person's lifestyle is already luxurious, for example, she wants to wear clothes that match her designer handbags and shoes, that is the reality that is displayed. Similarly, if her lifestyle is ordinary that is also shown to fans on social media," she said.
As for business, Che Ta said that there are celebrities who display affluence as proof of their success in building a business empire.
"When she becomes a product stockist, she needs to show what she does to inspire the stockists below her.
"Sometimes she does not even want to show it, but if she does use a Birkin bag then that's what people see," she said.
Commenting on the security aspect, Che Ta said that this was one of the factors why she sometimes leaves the house without wearing jewelry because she is afraid of unwanted incidents.
"We can display luxury jewelry but not be too obvious because we are worried that some people will be envious.
"If you want to show, be careful for safety. Unless the artistes have five to seven bodyguards to protect their safety," she said.
DAIYAN TRISHA
Meanwhile, actress and singer Daiyan Trisha said that the affluence she displays on social media is just part of the job because she collaborates a lot with various international brands.
"That's all I can say. There may be a few people who feel motivated to achieve the same lifestyle as displayed on my social media. It will give them the motivation to work even harder to achieve it," she said.
SHUIB
Popular comedian and actor Shuib said that not all artistes display affluence on social media because they want to show off and it would depend on the intention.
"There are artistes who show luxury because they have worked hard and that is a result that should be celebrated. It is an inspiration to others to succeed in the future.
"For artistes who are in business, it is an effort that should be appreciated to work hard to be more successful in the future," he said.
According to Shuib, the personality of an artiste is also enough to attract people to follow them on social media.
"Artistes don't even need to show their wealth because if someone already likes them, they still follow the artiste on social media.
"Need to ask fans why they follow celebrity A's account but not celebrity B's account?
"There are reasons that attract their attention and not necessarily about the affluence and so on. Celebrities are also more about inspiring and opening up opportunities for their followers to succeed," he said.
Shuib said, the term showing off affluence on social media is not accurate, rather it is more accurate to show off the success that is important for celebrities who do business.
"All that is proof that they can also do business well, have their own products and promote trust.
"No one wants their business not to be trusted by the masses. Maybe some show success but it is misunderstood as showing off affluence. Maybe some also intend to do that, you have to ask them why," he said.
Asked if the luxury shown on social media could invite danger such as being robbed and so on, Shuib advised all his followers on social media to be more careful.
"These dangerous things do not only happen to celebrities but also to all members of the community. Those who are complacent and negligent will be in danger," he said.
Asked if he chooses to display affluence such as luxury houses and expensive cars on social media, Shuib said that not everyone shows their assets to brag and show off.
"We only celebrate success in the field of the arts. If we don't show success, how can we win the trust of the public or partners in business?
"People don't see what artistes go through behind the scenes, even though everyone is trying hard to be successful. Who knows we will be able to produce more successful people in the future," he said.
ZIZAN RAZAK
Celebrities who project luxury on social media need to know their respective objectives and intentions to do so.
Actor and comedian, Zizan Razak said that if it involves a matter of work and sponsorship where the artiste has to upload a picture of him with a watch, sofa, or luxury car on social media as an ambassador or the face of the brand involved, it should not be disputed.
"If the collaboration with the brand is good for the reputation as a celebrity, I will also accept, for example, collaboration with an international brand," he said.
Zizan added that he does not like to show luxury on social media.
"I'm a bit of an introvert and I don't want people to know if possible. For example, the car I bought to make my mother happy, but my brother uploaded a picture of the car on social media," he said.
Zizan said that he had always practiced a simple lifestyle since before becoming a celebrity.
"I still shop like I used to even though I can eat and wear anything now. The definition of success for actors is that we have to act as well as possible. When people leave the stage, they are happy and entertained watching our acting," he said.
When asked about the risk of unwanted events, Zizan said, it is unavoidable in today's world.
"If an artiste wants to feature a luxury house on social media, make sure that the security aspects must also be great and sophisticated. For example, luxury cars have great security aspects but they can also be stolen," he said.
AERIL ZAFREL
"I just want to share joy. That's all. What people think, I can't help it," said actor and entrepreneur, Aeril Zafrel, about his act of sharing his possessions, which are luxury cars.
According to Aeril, sharing on social media is a form of preserving memories and he is alright with it as long as what is displayed is not exaggerated.
"For me, every share is more like a memory. I show it as proof of business success and I don't share about wealth or luxury every time.
"What I share is more or less the same as product founders or other businessmen. I have never gone beyond the limit by showing all the contents of the house and scattering money.
"If you notice, from a long time ago I like to share about cars. So, for me, there are moments when I want to share, and I do. Not always," he said.
According to Aeril, each individual has their way and choice to share what they have.
Aeril said, being cautious and not going overboard about sharing on social media remains a reminder for him and his wife, actress Wawa Zainal.
"Everyone's way is different. My wife and I are more focused on introducing a product brand, not very personal things. It can be tiring at times but if you don't do it, there will be no sales and no one will want to see it.
"I'm also afraid of the existence of people who may have been targeting our lives all this time. I'm aware and afraid if something unwanted happens. At home, I'm always careful and watchful because of our children and family are there.
"When I'm outside, I never feel like I'm being followed because I don't look luxurious when I'm outside, I'm just like an ordinary person. I become myself. It's also tiring if I have to show off that wealth every time," he said.
Aeril said that most of the partnerships made also received media coverage, including the success of owning his own business office.
"I don't need to show too much because everyone already knows what I have. Wawa is the same, she doesn't show it.
"So for me, whatever wealth I have now, just keep it quiet.
"I don't even know what people think of us. I've never thought about what people perceive of us.
"If they want to see us as successful and rich, we're okay. If they think otherwise of us, that's okay too.
"Most importantly is that we know what we have," he said.
