Wushu queen Cheong Min rules Asia

KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu queen Tan Cheong Min overcame illness to win the nandao gold medal at the Asian Championships in Macau today.

The 25-year-old collected 9.693 points at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. Uzbekistan's Darya Latisheva settled for silver (9.690) and Iran's Helia Asadian took bronze (9.676).

Cheong Min started her campaign in Macau by earning a nanquan silver on Thursday despite suffering from diarrhea.

The former world champion has finally won an Asian Championships gold, and she will have a chance to add another medal from the nangun event tomorrow.

"This medal not only belongs to me, it belongs to our Malaysian team. Because of the support and the care from the president, coaches, family and my teammates, I can stand in the arena and fight for it," said Cheong Min.

"My aim was to perform without any points deductions and mistakes, and if I got a medal, it would be a bonus to me and of course to the team."

The Malaysian team have collected two golds, two silvers and two bronzes in Macau.

The second day of the competition saw Malaysia's Si Shin Peng win the men's jianshu bronze with 9.693 points. The gold went to China's Yang Yalin (9.810) while Macau's Kuong Chi Hin took the silver (9.693).

In women's daoshu, Lee Jia Rong finished fourth with 9.670 points, narrowly missing out on the bronze, which went to Singapore's Kimberly Ong (9.6703). Macau's Sou Cho Man claimed the gold (9.686) and Japan's Kana Ikeuchi took silver (9.673).

Veteran Clement Ting bagged the men's gunshu bronze with 9.696 points. The gold went to South Korea's Lee Yong Hyun (9.703) while Singapore's Jowen Lim claimed the silver (9.703).

Earlier in the day, Bryan Tie won his second medal at the Asian Championships by claiming the nandao silver (9.703). China's Du Hongjie clinched the gold (9.796) and Macau's Huang Jun Hua completed the podium (9.703).

In men's taijiquan, Tan Zhi Yan missed out on a podium finish, scoring 9.693 points, as he was overtaken by South Korea's An Hyeong, who also scored 9.693 points, but had a higher difficulty rating.

China's Gao Haonan won the gold (9.813) while Jones Inso of the Philippines took silver (9.963).
