Bonnie breaks world record, wins gold [WATCH]

PARIS: Powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin delivered Malaysia's second gold medal at the Paris Paralympics in style with a new world record of 232kg in the men's up to 72kg final.

The 25-year-old Sarawakian was in a class of his own at the La Chapelle Arena as he took an unassailable lead from his first lift.

He started his campaign with 221kg in his first lift and 226kg in his second before the 232kg lift in the third attempt to rewrite his Tokyo Paralympic record of 228kg and the 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championship of 231kg.

The Malaysian contingent now have secured two gold medals in Paris. Para-shuttler Cheah Liek Hou delivered the first gold medal in the SU5 category (physical impairment) on Monday.

The spotlight now turns to defending champion Abdul Latif Romly in men's T20 long jump on Sunday, where he'll be aiming to become the first Malaysian to win three gold medals at the Paralympics.
