Indonesia halt archers progress in team event

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's campaign in the women's archery team event came to an early end at the Paris Olympics today.

National trio Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi, Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil and Syaqiera Mashayikh lost 5-3 (54-52, 47-55, 53-51, 52-52) to Indonesia in their 1/8 elimination round encounter at Esplanade des Invalides.

Indonesia, represented by Diananda Choirunisa, Nurafifah Kamal and Rezza Octavia, will next face China in the quarterfinals later today.

Malaysia had earlier on Thursday placed 10th from 12 teams in the ranking round while Indonesia were seventh.

Ariana, who turned 19 yesterday, admitted it was not the result they were hoping but is maintaining a positive outlook.

"Individually, we did show some improvement (over ranking round) and we lost quite narrowly today," said Ariana.

"There is a little frustration because we probably could have done better as a team.

"There was a bit of nervousness at the start, however, it was just for the first round and we managed to adapt after that.

"Personally, I am pleased with the improvements we managed and I am looking forward to the Olympic rounds (individual event) later this week.

"I am also happy that my family is here to support me. I managed to spend some time with them for my birthday."

Ariana, Azreena and Syaqiera will next compete in the women's individual event which begins on Tuesday.
